Crap TV Flashbacks: Joe Millionaire
If you didn’t hate “Reality TV” enough by 2003, the ridiculousness of it all was really coming into form with shows like Joe Millionaire. While I didn’t watch the show myself regularly, I did have a girlfriend that DID watch it, and it really showed me that I had lost the battle of keeping this kind of crap out of my home.
Joe Millionaire was broadcast on Fox beginning in January 2003. It was broadcast in the UK that same year. There was even a sequel, The Next Joe Millionaire later in October 2003.
The premise of Joe Millionaire is that bachelor Evan Marriott has inherited millions of dollars and is searching for a potential bride. He takes a group of hopeful women on several dates to exotic and luxurious locations, eliminating women at the end of each episode until only one woman remains. The main gimmick of the show is that the entire “millionaire” premise is actually an elaborate ruse. He isn’t a millionaire at all, but just a construction worker. Apparently he was also found out to have utilized his ab workouts as an underwear model previously as well, but he certainly was no millionaire.
The show ended with a reveal and the woman had to decide if she would stay with the guy anyways. Since she did they really DID get a million dollars.
If you are into this stuff I can see the appeal. I can definitely see the appeal for women because they love to watch other women make fools of themselves and get embarrassed. This show certainly did that since these are all gold diggers that are getting fooled on national TV.
This show may not be the worst of all Reality TV, but it was discussed around me, and I hated it so much that it is memorable. This was the show that I had to accept that television had been ruined forever.
Here’s just a little taste of how moronic this show was:

I thought this was the reality TV show where they made some guy believe HE was in a reality show while the rest of the cast were paid actors.
Well, just as bad.
