Crap TV Flashbacks: Empty Nest
Empty Nest ran on NBC from 1988 to 1995. Quite shocking that the show had that loong of a run to me. Of course I did watch it, but it doesn’t mena that show was particularly good or anything. It just happened to be a show that I suppose was one of the only shows on the day it was on, and back then I tend to think that I actually watched the network channels Prime Time shows for some odd reason. This was before we had 1000 cable channels to choose from, and HDTVs on our tv wall mount so I guess it is no surprise that many of these shows lasted as long as they did.
The show revolved around successful pediatrician Dr. Harry Weston (Richard Mulligan), whose life is turned upside down when his wife dies and two of his adult daughters move back into the family home in Miami. Ummm…losers?
This show was actually a spinoff of Golden Girls. You know that show with all the old ladies like Bea Arthur? Pretty much the prequel to the old man movies that came out a few years later called Grumpy Old Men. In fact the Weston family lived a crossed the street from the Golden Girls, although they were never part of the show much.
Eldest daughter Carol (Dinah Manoff) was a neurotic and high-strung recent divorcĂ©e, while middle daughter Barbara (Kristy McNichol) was a tough undercover police officer. The two sisters frequently bickered and vied for the attention of their father (who they still called “Daddy”). The Westons’ large dog Dreyfuss was also frequently shown for comedic relief.
They had the typical “Larry” (Threes Company) kind of guy that came over to sexually harrass the daughter daily as well. Weston neighbor Charley (David Leisure), a womanizing cruise ship employee who frequently barged in to the house unannounced to borrow food or make sexist comments.
That is a recipe for comedy folks.
